BUS STUDENT FARE CARD


Applications for the current 2010/2011 academic year have now closed. Surrey County Council are currently only accepting lost, stolen and faded applications.

You will be able to download an application form for the 2011/2012 academic year from from the middle of July 2011.

A bus student fare card enables 16 to 18 year old Surrey students attending full-time further education to travel on Surrey buses at the same fare as under 16s.

To qualify you must fulfill ALL of the following:

  1. Attend a full-time further education course and be aged 16 but under 19 on 1 September 2011
  2. Your journey must start and/or finish in the administrative county of Surrey.
  3. Live in one of the 11 boroughs/districts of Surrey:
    • Elmbridge
    • Epsom & Ewell
    • Guildford
    • Mole Valley
    • Reigate & Banstead
    • Runnymede
    • Spelthorne
    • Surrey Heath
    • Tandridge
    • Waverley
    • Woking

The bus student fare card is issued for the home to school/college journey BUT additional concessions are available from most Surrey bus operators at ALL times.

Cost of the bus student fare card

The cost of the bus student fare card is £25.00 and is valid from the date of issue until the end of the following August.

Discounts of £12.50 are available for those students who are receipt of an EMA of at least £20 a week or in receipt of a guaranteed bursary (for students in care, care leavers and those on income support) or whose family are in receipt of the maximum working tax credit, or one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobseeker's Allowance (IBJSA)
  • Income related Employment ans Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
  • Financial support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Guarantee element of State Pension Credit

Discounts are only available with valid proof of the above documentation.  Please send in photocopies of the full relevant documents.

Please note that student fare cards are not valid on routes operated by London buses due to revised travel arrangements for 16-17 year old students.  The routes affected are:-

You will need to complete an application form and send it with a photograph and a cheque or postal order made payable to SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL to the Student Fare Card Team (address below) by the following dates to ensure collection from your school or college within the timescales stated.

   Received by 15 August 2011   Start of autumn term (5 Sep 2011)

   Recieved at other times            Up to 15 working days

Students can apply for the bus student fare card at any time during the academic year

Alternatively you can contact the Surrey County Council Contact Centre for a form on 03456 009 009.

To replace a bus student fare card please write to the Student Fare Card Team enclosing a new passport sized photo and a cheque for £10.00 payable to Surrey County Council.  You do not need to complete a new application.  Only one duplicate will be issued in an academic year.

Changing your mode of transport

Once you have received your student fare card and decide that you would like to change your mode of transport i.e. changing from a train to a bus or vice versa, you will need to write to the Student Fare Card Team, returning the original fare card that you have, together with a cover letter, a new passport photograph and a cheque or postal order for £10 made payable to Surrey County Council.  This is a flat rate to cover administration costs.  Once processed your new card will be sent to your school/college for collection.
